Memorial sign to R.N. Harbel
The monument to General Rodion (Rudolf) Harbel was unveiled on October 8, 2011, on the day of the 603 anniversary of Bendery. Being swiss by origin, R. Harbel served in the Russian army and was a specialist in military engineering. He developed a plan for the siege of the Bendery Fortress in 1770, which was brilliantly executed: in just 8 weeks engineers made a tunnel to the walls and laid 400 pounds of gunpowder. A powerful explosion filled up the ramparts and formed a kind of bridge over which the Russian troops went on the attack and eventually took possession of Bendery.
